The contribution will help cover travel expenses (i.e. flight tickets and accommodation) for officials from LDCs attending MC13. The financing will be submitted to the LDCs Trust Fund, which is set up for each Ministerial Conference. Multiple WTO members contribute to this fund.
“MC13 will be an important opportunity to better enable LDCs to use trade and access to global markets to improve people’s livelihoods,” WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said. “I thank Australia for helping ensure that LDCs can participate effectively in these discussions at MC13.”
Australia’s Ambassador to the WTO, George Mina, said: “Australia is pleased to support the active participation of LDCs at the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference, as we have done at previous Conferences. We strongly believe in the benefits of integrating LDCs into the global trading system. MC13 will be a critical opportunity for all members to deliver robust and lasting WTO reforms, and LDC presence in Abu Dhabi will help them to advocate directly on matters of interest to them.”
Overall, Australia has contributed over CHF 21 million to the various WTO trust funds in over 20 years.
