DG Okonjo-Iweala congratulates participants in Latin America regional trade policy course

Co-organized by the WTO and El Colegio de México, the course covered the WTO Agreements and other trade-related matters, including regional trade policy issues.

“Trade-related technical assistance and capacity building programmes are at the centre of the WTO’s work,” DG Okonjo-Iweala told participants. “The tools and knowledge that officials like you take away from courses like this one are part of making sure the WTO delivers for the lives and livelihoods of people in your respective countries. As we continue our efforts to strengthen and update multilateral trade rules, and to deliver results at our 13th Ministerial Conference next February in Abu Dhabi, we need all members to be fully involved as engaged, informed participants.”

The course included participants from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.

Also speaking at the course’s conclusion were the President of El Colegio de México, Dr Silvia Elena Giorguli Saucedo, and the Head of the Geneva-based Courses Unit of the WTO’s Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC), Daniel Morales.

Dr Giorguli Saucedo said: “With the completion of the third edition of the Regional Trade Policy Course, El Colegio de México contributes to the achievement of the objectives set by the WTO, strengthening its position as an institution of higher education focused on teaching and research in social sciences and humanities, with expertise in trade and international relations”.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Franklin Josue Miranda from El Salvador, said: “Not only have we completed the course, but even better, we acquired a renewed vision of trade. We have become advocates of fair trade, drivers of regional cooperation and promoters of an inclusive and sustainable trading system.”

Mr Morales congratulated the participants for their positive spirit and personal involvement that helped them successfully complete the course. He also encouraged them to continue developing their career paths using the curriculum from the ITTC’s Progressive Learning Strategy.

Regional Trade Policy Courses are intermediate level training activities (“level 2” in the Progressive Learning Strategy). These two-month training events are directed at government officials working on trade-related issues who have successfully completed an introductory “level 1” course.

Regional Trade Policy Courses are organized in partnership with regional academic institutions and trade practitioners. The objective is to foster networks among government officials, regional trade experts and regional trade-related institutions with a view to enhancing dialogue on national and regional trade policy issues.
