The programme aims to enhance members’ compliance with subsidy notification obligations under the WTO’s Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, thereby strengthening transparency in global trade.
Building on the success of a 2023 pilot programme, this year’s workshop maintained a practical, action-oriented approach with participants who engaged in lively discussions with experts. The goal was to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to fulfil their notification obligations, while streamlining internal processes.
Underscoring the comprehensive knowledge gained, Madhu Monika Chand, a participant from Fiji’s Ministry of Trade, said: “The training has enhanced my understanding of the technical aspects of subsidy notifications, enabling me to better assess and prepare Fiji’s subsidy notifications in accordance with WTO requirements. I now feel confident about returning to Fiji to complete the preparation of subsidy notifications and submitting them to the WTO Secretariat in a timely manner.”
Another participant, Antoine Boris Foe Essomba from Cameroon’s Ministry of Trade, noted: “The training has equipped me with the skills needed to draft my country’s subsidy notifications effectively. What remains now is to develop the necessary mechanisms and good practices as we move forward through the next stage of the programme,” he said.
