WTO Advanced Trade Policy Course in English underway in Geneva

Speaking at the course’s opening, China’s Ambassador to the WTO, Li Chenggang, said that the training programme is taking place at a crucial time, for the multilateral trading system is facing global challenges which require coordinated trade policy responses.

“All members, including China, are rolling up their sleeves and doing their utmost efforts to ensure that the WTO can deliver more at the 13th Ministerial Conference. The topics under negotiation include dispute settlement reform, fisheries subsidies negotiations, trade and development, trade and environment, agriculture and food security, all of which you will be able to learn during this course,” he told participants.

Also speaking at the event, Bridget Chilala, Director of the WTO’s Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation, encouraged participants to be proactive and make the most of the training course.  She said: “Taking part in an advanced trade policy course is about applying in a practical way the knowledge you already have of the WTO agreements. The course will also demonstrate, through learning by doing, how to fulfil your WTO obligations, for example in the area of transparency and notifications. Over the next eight weeks, in addition to benefiting from the knowledge-sharing of a vast range of WTO Secretariat staff and external speakers, you will also be exposed to the day-to-day work of some WTO bodies, such as the Trade Policy Review Body and the General Council.”

Up until 8 December 2023, participants will examine the legal and economic aspects of WTO rules and disciplines in interactive sessions focusing on case studies, simulations and exercises, including the practical use of WTO databases and analytical tools available online.

In addition, round table discussions will provide a platform for practical exchanges, sharing experience and best practices, as well as discussing topical business issues.
